Toxoplasmosis
Healthy Individuals
Require no treatment of infection. The infection usually resolves itself after a few months to a year.
Individuals at High Risk
Pregnant Women-
Toxoplasma gondii is able to cross the placenta passing the infection from mother to infant. Toxoplasmosis can create a variety of issues for the developing fetus. Risk is greatest during the 1st trimester. Signs and symptoms of fetal infection include: spontaneous abortion, still birth, epilepsy, mental retardation, microcephaly (abnormally small head), inflammation of the retina, blindness, anemia, and jaundice.
Individuals that are Immunocompromised-
Toxoplasmosis can cause spastic paralysis, blindness, myocarditis, encephalitis, and eventually death.
Retinal Damage
Ocular infections lead to acute inflammatory lesions of the retina and leaves retinochoroidal scarring after resolution of the lesions.
Toxoplasmosis can be reactivate, each time causing more damage to the retina. Symptoms include eye pain, sensitivity to light, tearing of the eyes, and blurred vision
